Paging Nature – Pagers and the Great Outdoors

In the swinging sixties, Nancy’s Cafe in East Anglia’s Cley was the place to be. However, the tiny cafe in a picturesque part of the British countryside wasn’t part of the singing, dancing free-love revolution, but rather a bustling hang-out for twitchers. Bird-spotters used to flood the phone-lines with news of rare spottings or congregate over coffee to pass on helpful hints to other enthusiasts. Fifty years later and technology has finally taken over and the must have gadget for all birdwatchers is the humble pager.

Pagers might not be the most modern of electronic gadgets, but it seems they have their place in ornithology. While the bulky mobile phone might lose signal, quickly run out of battery or disturb a nesting warbler, the pager is small, discreet and can be switched to vibrate. Worn on a belt-clip or simply carried in your knapsack, for ornithologists, the pager can serve as a network of UK birdlife and provide up-to-date information on all the rarest finds. Before pagers took over, birders had to phone a pre-recorded phone number for their information and, for many, that involved the inconvenience of having to find a local phone box whilst out and about in the countryside.

Most companies that provide pagers have a built in subscription service for birders and one particular company boasts that last year it sent subscribers around 800,000 messages. However, all ornithologists are different so before you sign up you can choose what sort of birds you’re interested in. You may be a die-hard birder or perhaps you are just someone that likes to dabble in a bit of ornithology now and then; whatever your level of activity is, the frequency of your updates will be governed by this.

In Dorset, pagers are also being used to track badgers. Because of their nocturnal habits badgers are the most difficult animals in the UK to spot; however, fortunately for badger watchers, the animals have terrible eyesight, so as long as you can keep quiet your chances of spotting them are pretty good. This means mobile phones are out and discreet pagers are definitely in. Badger watchers regularly send other enthusiasts information on possible setts and births via pagers, proving that the device is still popular among wildlife lovers.

With many species of bat set to become endangered in the UK, bat detectors are using their pagers to send updates and grid references to other bat-lovers and bat conservation groups. The idea is that this will enable them to create a nationwide database of all the areas in the United Kingdom that are abundant in bats, giving them some indication of which species need saving and which are more common in the great British countryside.

When it comes to nature it seems that newer technology isn’t always better technology. While mobile phones may come with flashy apps and unlimited internet access, when you’re looking for a trusty method of communication that doesn’t run out of signal or lose its battery power when you need it most, then pagers beat mobiles hands-down.

Some people who don’t have a car or a lot of money can try hitchhiking. If you are travelling to a distant place it is often necessary to travel by plane. When people are travelling they may carry different kinds of luggage depending on the kind of trip. If they are going on a long journey they might take a big suitcase or a duffel bag. If they are going on shorter trip they might carry a tote bag, a briefcase, a knapsack, or a small rucksack.

There are many advantages to travelling like fun, adventure, the excitement of seeing a new place, and learning about a new culture but there are also disadvantages. When you are travelling you don’t have all your comforts from home, you are in an unfamiliar environment, you might not like the food that is available in a foreign country, or you might even meet dangerous people who would like to rob you. When you are travelling you must take extra precautions to be sure that you have a safe journey.

Time Management Tips – Small Steps Can Make a Big Difference

Time management is a major issue for many people. And it’s not getting any better. Experts estimate that during the last 25 years, our leisure time has declined by 37% while our workweek has increased by a full day. The American’s Use of Time Project at the University of Maryland revealed that the average American spends more than 20 hours per week on housework.

Even if you are an otherwise excellent time manager, a disorganized physical environment will steal a large amount of time and energy from your day. USA Today reports that Americans collectively waste 9 million hours every day looking for misplaced items.

Here are some small time management tips that can help make a big impact:

  • Take 15 – At the end of every day at the office, take 15 minutes to put things in order. Put away files that are no longer in use, plug in to do’s on your daily list from your master one, take out files to be used the next day, etc. That way, you come into a clean ready-to-work environment. At home before you go to bed at night, spend 15 minutes picking up stray items and putting them back into their proper homes.
  • Prepare for Your Morning the Night Before - Prepare for your morning the night before. Gather everything you will need, such as your pocketbook, briefcase, knapsack, keys, etc. If you have a “home” for these things near your entryway, you will never have a problem scurrying around for them when you are leaving the house. Choose your clothes and set them out in a convenient location for dressing. Get out what you need to quickly and easily prepare breakfast. And be sure to pack your lunch the night before also!
  • Set up a Gift Zone – Buy cards in advance for many types of occasions and even consider some generic gifts for house warming, birthdays, and baby showers. Keep the items together in a gift, card, and gift-wrapping station with everything at your fingertips if you need to write out a card, choose a gift and wrap it.
  • Record TV Shows – Turn on the television only when your show is scheduled to begin and turn it off when it is over. Turning the television off 1 hour per week gives you 52 extra hours in a year. Some people record shows even if they are home to be able to avoid commercials and not interrupt themselves but save the show for when it is most convenient for them to watch.
  • Listen and Learn – Listen to audio books or podcasts for your commute (learn a foreign language, work related, novels, etc.), or consider carrying a mini-recorder to dictate work assignments or even personal ideas.
  • Portable Reading - Carry a “to read” file with you for those times when you are waiting on line, waiting at the doctor’s office, on the subway, etc. If the reading material sits in a pile at home, it hardly ever gets read!
  • Delivery Anyone? – See what services offer delivery, like office supplies, dry cleaning, food, etc.
  • Organized Errands – Run all of your errands at one time, starting farthest from your house and ending up closest to home.
  • Call & Confirm – Call ahead before going to the store to see if they have what you need, call to confirm appointments before you show up, call to see if the restaurant has seating. Save yourself unnecessary drives.

If you want to know how to achieve life-long weight loss then all you have to do is eat less and move more! It’s a pretty simple formula but for some reason so many people get it wrong (approximately 66% of North Americans!).

These 2 weight loss components (exercise and diet) can be further scrutinized and detailed for better understanding and application.

Here are 5 ways to help you lose weight for good. Apply these weight loss strategies today and consistently over the next few weeks and you will reap the benefits.

1. CLEAN OUT THE TOXINS

If you want to lose weight indefinitely, then you need to cleanse and detoxify the toxins and acid accumulation in your body.

Why?

Because your body, as a means of protecting its vital tissues and organs, stores these dangerous compounds in its fat cells. As a result, your fat cells swell and your body increases. Fat cells don’t multiply, they simply increase in size.

In order for these fat cells to shrink they must not be as “needed”, meaning that there should be less acid and toxic residue in your body. Less garbage means that less garbage bags are needed. Get the analogy.

As a result, your body has to waste its own enzymes and energy to break down these foods. To alleviate the stress on your body, take 1-2 digestive enzymes with your cooked meals.

3. START YOUR DAY “HUFFING AND PUFFING”

Exercising first thing in the morning is a fantastic way to crank up your metabolism for the day ahead. If your body’s not used to getting out of bed and moving right away then just start with some brisk walking. Eventually, you want to build up to working up a good sweat for at least 20-30 minutes to get your day started.

If your goal is to lose weight, then getting your heart rate elevated and boosting your metabolism throughout the day is critical. The earlier you can rev up your metabolism the better. This is important since your basal metabolic rate accounts for 70% of all the calories you burn each day.

Here are some metabolism-boosting exercise ideas to do first thing in the morning:

o Hill walking (with a knapsack to make it more challenging)

o Walking or running on the soft sand of your local beach

o Skipping rope, jumping jacks, or walking/running stairs

o Body weight exercises such as push-ups, lunge walks, squats, and pull-ups

4. CARDIO INTERVAL TRAINING

Interval training rocks! Don’t get me wrong, long and slow cardio works as well – if you have 3-4 hours per day to spend exercising at a snails pace. When it comes down to it, interval training is by far the best form of cardio for burning fat and improving all other facets of your cardiovascular fitness.

And, it is also much more time efficient. With as little as 10 minutes you can drop more sweat and burn more fat than most people do an hour!

Here’s an interval training workout that you can do on any cardio machines (or outdoors)

o Sprint-Jog – Sprint for 30 seconds, then jog to recover for 60 seconds. Repeat 10 times.

5. STRENGTH TRAINING IS CRITICAL

How much more research do you possibly need to hear about to realize that strengthening your muscles is the KEY to maintaining a healthy lean body for life?

Since muscle mass one of the biggest contributors to your metabolic rate it follows that the more muscle (less body fat) you have, the greater your metabolic rate – it’s that simple. This means that even at rest you’ll be burning more calories than someone who has less lean body mass than you.

Here are some ideas:

o Follow a well-designed strength training program that stresses your muscles at least 2-3 times per week with a weight that will only allow 6-10 reps (women too!) for 2-3 sets.

o Use full body exercises such as squat presses, lunges with biceps curls, or dumbbell cleans; instead, of single muscle exercises like seated biceps curls. The more muscle you involve, the more calories you burn.
